I do like the 20 dollar trick, you dont really know if it works, but I haven't had a bad room in any of my occasions where i used it. But it will also depend on availability in the hotel and the dates you travel. I did a cabana for 2 people last year at the MGM Grand at the lazy river, I really enjoyed this. In my opinion well worth the money. The MGM Grand do a 'Run of the House - Grand Tower Room' so you can end up with any room in the Grand Tower. This will allow you to avoid the West Wing. Normally the room you will get is a Grand Queen, depending on occupancy etc you can upgrade/change to Grand King/Stay Well/Tower Spa for an extra fee per night.
The Carson Tower, recently renovated in 2018, offers affordable luxury with rooms that have a residential feel with a sophisticated palette inspired by the warm, natural tones of the surrounding desert landscape.
